Origins Of The Breed

In Brief:

The Rottweilers name comes from the German town of Rottweil in the Black Forest region. The breed is thought to have evoved from the mixture of Roman herding dogs, that travelled with their legions over the Alps. native cattle dogs and broad mouth forms of British and Dutch Bulldogs

With the coming of the railways, the driving of cattle was forbidden, but the Rottweiler gained a new occupation pulling butchers carts and other small carts. As time went by this work also became obsolete and the future of the Rottweiler looked bleak.

In 1910 the breed was reconised as a police dog working along side the German Shepherd Dog, Dobermann and Airdale. Since then the breed has gone from strength to strength gaining worldwide recognition.

In 1931 the first Rottweilers where imported to the United States five years later the breed was introduced to the UK. The Second World War serverely affected Rottweiler breeding, When the situation eased the breed began to increase its numbers gradually.

The breed is now extremely popular worldwide.
